World Heart Day 2020: 5 Lifestyle Tips to a Healthy Life

“A beating heart is evidence of life
Keep it alive to help it keep you alive.”

Place your right index finger on your left inner wrist below your left thumb. Feel it? That is your heart beating. That is your life. A healthy heart promises a healthy life and a healthy lifestyle doesn’t only secure your health but also ensures you a happy life with a peace of mind. With the ongoing pandemic, peace of mind is one thing that we all are craving for. Living a healthy life isn’t as complicated as it sounds, with just a few checks and commitments, we can live a life free of any diseases and ailments. Let’s have a quick look at these points:

Eating Healthy:

Every little morsel has an impact on the workings of our body, hence it is important that we are aware of what we are eating and when. Berries, of any kind, are a booster for our heart and one should consume them on a daily basis for a healthy heart. Fresh vegetables and fruits along with whole grains are rich in high fibre should definitely be added to your daily food diet. Avoid too oily food, deep-fries, and preservatives. Packaged food that has trans fat, sodium or added sugar should be a big NO if you want a healthy heart.

Get your rusty body to work:

When it comes to living healthy, exercise top of the list. So clear your body rusts by making it work. Yoga, gymming, aerobics, zumba, and there are many that you can choose according to your mood. If you are a lazy person and want to make the most out of your least exercise, make a short effective routine. For aerobics, a 30 minutes aerobic exercise for 5 times a week is enough to keep you healthy and energetic. The 6 Asanas of Yoga for a healthy heart will keep any heart disease at bay. Including pushups, pull-ups, squats, and jumping in the 15-20 minutes daily exercise is a good enough start too. If none of these interests you, pick cycling, swimming or running, which are as effective as any of the exercises.

Drink Healthy:

Hit the juice shop instead of a pub and order a fruit beer instead of alcohol. Try this for a couple of months and feel the difference in you, your body and your life at many levels. We all know our body is made up of 70% of water, so it needs water…lots of water. Including liquid diets like fresh juices with pulp and lemonade and water will all take you a long way.

Meditate:

Mental Health is just as important for life as physical health. Stress and anxiety are among the major reasons for heart problems like cardiac arrest and CAD. Meditation and breathing helps fight against these unspoken diseases. When you wake up in the morning, don’t just jump out of bed. Sit up for 5-10 minutes and breath. Close your eyes and focus on your breathing, clearing your mind of all thoughts. Good music will also help you set your mood for the day.

Regular Check-ups:

Just like your vehicle needs regular maintenance, so does your body. Visit a doctor once in a while to ensure the body is functioning well. Cholesterol and diabetes tests can be done once in 3-4 years but you can test your blood pressure once in a while. Get your body checked up at least twice a year and make sure to follow your doctor’s advice.

This is all you really need to do. A healthy diet and regular exercise will keep a check on your blood pressure, cholesterol and other ailments that may be dangerous to your heart. Meditation and breathing will help you calm down and let you see the world in a better and positive perspective. It will reduce your stress, tensions and anxiety that slowly affects the functioning of the heart. Avoid drinking alcohol and smoking cigarettes in order to switch to a healthy lifestyle. Once you have ticked off these in your routine, you are ready for all the challenges life has to throw at you.
