Met Gala, ceremonially titled as Costume Institute Gala or Met Ball plays the role of an asset for Metropolitan Museum of Arts Costume Institute in New York City. An eminent and well-known event in the world, established in order to acquire the newly founded Costume Institute and blotch the outset of its annual exhibit. Based upon the legacy left by former Vogue editor in chief Diana Vreeland as “special consultant”, to Costume Institute, since 1973 the met gala became well-known as a luxurious, blockbuster event and is considered “The Jewel in the New York City’s Social Crown.”
Each year the event has an idea that recurs in or pervades a work of art and includes a cocktail hour and a formal dinner.
Planned on 1st Monday of May (the only day of the year besides Thanksgiving, Christmas Day, and New Year’s Day when the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Fifth Avenue location was closed to the public). This year it was held on May 6th, 2019.
Andrew Bolton, the curator of the Costume Institute, has framed the exhibition around Susan Sontag’s seminal 1964 essay Notes on “Camp”, which posited different ways in which the concept could be construed. Bolton told Hamish Bowles that he found Sontag’s writings so timely with what is going on culturally and politically that, “[he] felt it would have a lot of cultural resonance.” Read Bowles’s full musings on the Met Gala 2019 theme here.
“Camp: Notes on Fashion” is a fitting theme for the annual Met Gala, which itself is usually a stage for camp costumes, writes Vogue contributor Osman Ahmed in his exploration of the position. Co-hosts Lady Gaga, who orchestrated four outfit changes before even entering the ball. Harry Styles, who got his ears pierced to offset his customized GUCCI look, and Serena Williams, who chose to accessorize her Versace dress with a pair of trainers, were among the first to show off their interpretations on the theme. A slew of the world’s most-famous faces then descended on the red carpet. See all the action on those much-documented stairs here.
Every year heads the best and brightest from worlds of fashion, music, film, sports. Guest lists included Lady Gaga, Priyanka Chopra, Nick Jonas, Deepika Padukone, Kim Kardashian, Harry Styles, Gigi Hadid.
